About the project

The Things that Hang Around: What Keychains and Bag Charms Mean to Us is the current title of my Master's thesis at Hochschule Anhalt's Design Research programme.

Influenced by my background in Fine Arts and Product Design, this study stems from a deep interest in the effects of small personal objects on the human psyche. These objects may be bearers of memories, signifiers of identities, a source of comfort, a tool of convenience, a tiny work of art, a part of a collection. The meanings they embody vary according to individual and circumstances. Like an active matter, they may transform, shift, and evolve. They carry the potential to affect our emotions and behaviour.

This collection of narratives and reflections revolves around the keychain and other 'hangable' objects we attach to our accessories in life. Perhaps along the way we get attached to them as well and let them hang around, metaphorically speaking. The invitation to everyone and anyone to contribute their experiences surrounding this category of objects constitutes an aspect of my research. Nonetheless, it is my wish for the thesis to go beyond the 24,000 word count and twenty-week duration, and like the subject of study, be something that hangs around.
